Etymology edit

From vak (occupation, profession) +‎ idiotisme (idiotism, severe mental retardation), calque of German Fachidiotismus, likely a calque of French idiotisme du métier, apparently first used by Marx in Misère de la philosophie. The term entered common usage in 1968, at the time of Marxist student protests.
