From French vanille (“vanilla”), from Spanish vainilla (“vanilla”), from both vaina (“pod”), from Latin vāgīna (“sheath”), from Proto-Italic *wāgīnā (“sheath, scabbard”), possibly from Proto-Indo-European *wag- (“sheath, cover”), and the suffix -illa (diminutive), from Old Spanish -iella, from Latin -ella(m), of -ellus, a form of -ulus, from Proto-Italic *-olos, from *-elos, from Proto-Indo-European *-e-lós, from Proto-Indo-European *-lós (forms agent nouns from verbal roots). Doublet of vagina.
Cognate with Danish vanilje, Dutch vanille, German Vanille, Swedish vanilj and English vanilla.
