A formation from vig, possibly related to Proto-Indo-European *u̯eik 'force, energy (victory, battle, etc.). Compare Latin vinco (I win, beat), Lithuanian veikiù (make work), Old High German wig (battle, struggle), wigant (cripple), Old English wǣgan (to torment, smite).
