Variant of finew, from Middle English *fine, from Old English fyne (moisture, mold, mildew), from Proto-Germanic *funiz, *funją (moisture, mold), from Proto-Indo-European *pan- (mud, slush, morass). Related to Middle Low German vunsch and Middle Dutch vunsc (musty), Old English fenn (swamp, bog). More at fen.
