Proto-Germanic *warþō, an extension of a stem-verb *warōną (“be on guard”) (whence warian). Cognate with Old High German warta (“watch”) (German Warte (“watchtower”)), Old Saxon warda (Middle Dutch warde), Old Norse varða (“cairn”).
