Etymology edit
Sino-Vietnamese word from 社團, composed of 社 (“commune”) and 團 (“Đoàn”). Superficially resembles Japanese 社団 (shadan, “corporation”) which is composed of the exact same elements but with different meanings, 社 (“corporation”) + 団 (“organization”).
