Diminutive from Middle Dutch sope, from Old Dutch *sopo, from Proto-West Germanic [Term?], from Proto-Germanic *supô. Doublet of soep, which via French ultimately derives from the same Germanic word of which zopie represents the directly inherited form (albeit with diminutive suffix).
