Borrowed from Aramaic אֲוׇוזָּא (ʾăwazzā), from Akkadian 𒊻𒄷 (ūsum, duck), related to Sumerian 𒊻𒄷 (uz, wild duck, waterfowl) with uncertain mutual borrowing direction, likely all onomatopoeic in origin; cognates with Hebrew אֲוָז (ʾăwāz) and Classical Syriac ܘܰܙܳܐ (wazzā), Ugaritic 𐎜𐎇 (ủz).
