- Alternatively, from Prakrit ghōḍa, from Sanskrit घोटक (ghoṭaka), from Proto-Dravidian *kHutt-.
The sense of knight (chess) is a semantic loan from Dutch paard (“knight (chess)”, literally “horse”).
