Etymology edit
From Proto-Finnic *süü, from Proto-Uralic *süxe or *süje. Cognates include Estonian süü, Komi-Zyrian сі (si). The sense "reason, cause" (and those akin to it) was originally figurative.

- (reason): With a nominal ("reason for X"), the nominal is in the illative case (in which case it usually comes after syy) or in the genitive case (in which case it usually comes before syy). With a verb ("reason to X"), the verb is in the first infinitive form.
