From Middle Vietnamese ꞗui, from Proto-Vietic *t-puːj (“joyful”); cognate with Muong pui, Tho [Cuối Chăm] puːj¹ and Chut [Rục] təpuːj¹. Compare also Nghệ An/Hà Tĩnh dialects bui.
Attested in Phật thuyết đại báo phụ mẫu ân trọng kinh (佛說大報父母恩重經) as 𬐩, consisting of 司 (MC si) and 盃 (MC pwoj) (modern SV: ti bôi).
