Inherited from Proto-Slavic *lęgati. Cognate with Slovak lengať (to dangle, to swing). Per Vasmer, probably related to Lithuanian lingúoti (to swing), lìngė (pole on which a cradle is suspended), Latvian lĩguôt (to swing, to sway), also lĩgât (1sg. lĩgãju), Sanskrit लङ्घति (láṅghati, to jump up, to bounce), also लङ्घयति (laṅgháyati), Old Irish lingid (to jump up, to bounce), Old High German lungar (quick, fast), Old English lungor (quick, fast), Ancient Greek ἐλαφρός (elaphrós, easy, agile).
