Etymology

edit

From għar (cave) +‎ għul (ogre). Modern irregular pronunciation possibly due to other old name of Casal Gregorio, Girgor or in this case Gargur in Maltese. The generally-considered-folk etymology of ‘the English mixing up the pronunciation of the name’ might have also taken effect.
