From Ottoman Turkish شاقردی (şaḳırdı, “a repeated or continuous clatter or rattle”),[1] from Ottoman Turkish شاقر (şaḳır, “onomatopoeic for; a rattling or rustling noise like a heavy rainfall”), from Ottoman Turkish شاق (şaḳ, “onomatopoeic for; a loud clacking noise as of the thud on a hard substance, the crack of a whip”),[2][3] morphologically şak + -ır + -tı.
