From Proto-Polynesian *kava-pusi (compare with Samoan 'avapuhi and Maori kōpī (“Corynocarpus laevigatus”))[1][2] from Proto-Polynesian *kawa.[3] Doublet of ʻawapuhi, ʻawa, and ʻawaʻawa.
