A Semitic origin has been assumed but Beekes doesn't dismiss a derivation from Pre-Greek, comparing the word with γάβενα (gábena) and κάβος (kábos). See also Latin gabata and Byzantine Greek γαβάθα (gabátha).

Pronunciation edit

Noun edit

γαβαθόν (gabathón)

  1. Hesychius' gives the definition as: τρύβλιον (trúblion, cup, bowl).
