editEtymology
editεφοπλ- (efopl-, “to stock ship, equip, get ready”) + -ιστής (-istís, “-ist, -er”), a calque of French armateur (literally “one who "arms" or equips a ship”).[1] The first component, a prefixed form of the verb εφοπλίζω (efoplízo), is synchronically analyzable as επι- (epi-, “on-”) + οπλίζω (oplízo, “to arm, equip”).
