From Proto-Hellenic *(h)méřřomai, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)mer- (to assign, allot). See also Latin mereō, merx and Hittite 𒈥𒀝𒍣 (mar-ak-zi /⁠marktsi⁠/, to divide).
