From Byzantine Greek Σκλάβος ‎(Sklábos), probably from earlier Σλαβῆνος ‎(Slabênos), from plural Σλαβῆνοι ‎(Slabênoi), from Proto-Slavic *slověne (plural; the singular form Proto-Slavic *slověninъ is derived from it). Compare the doublet Σλάβος ‎(Slávos, Slav). Compare also Latin sclavus.
