editFrom Ancient Greek Καύκασος (Kaúkasos), ultimately of Iranian origin.
Was already attested in Old East Slavic as Кавкасийскыѣ горы (Kavkasijskyjě gory), a calque of Καυκάσια ὄρη, however according to Vasmer and Trubachyov the current form Кавказ (Kavkaz) stems from French Caucase and German Kaukasus.
