EtymologyEdit

Most likely from Old Ukrainian вовъторъкъ (vovŭtorŭkŭ), овъторъкъ (ovŭtorŭkŭ), ultimately from Proto-Slavic *vъtorъkъ. The source of prothetic "о" is unknown.[1]

Sometimes alternatively explained as being equivalent to въ- (vŭ-) +‎ вторъкъ (vtorŭkŭ): "въ въторъкъ" - "в овторок" - "вовторок" - "вівторок".[2]
