Etymology

edit

According to Khalilov, from *лъацери ← *сацери (*lˢaceri ← *saceri), from Georgian საცერი (saceri).[1]

Note however that the Georgian word itself was umlauted from earlier *სა-ცარ- (*sa-car-), from Proto-Georgian-Zan *lʿa-car-, where *lʿ (not preserved in any of the daughter Kartvelian languages) is believed to have been /ɬ/, which corresponds exactly to Bezhta лъ (), as such the borrowing could have occurred at a much earlier date.

Note also Chechen цац (cac, sieve), Ingush цаца (caca), Bats ცაც (cac), all possibly borrowed from Proto-Georgian-Zan *car- : *cr- (to sieve), the same ultimate source.
