Etymology

Attested in the 16th-century Domostroy as "вишневый морс" and "малиновый морс". Usually associated with мороси́ть (morosítʹ, “to drizzle”), but compare Romanian mursă (“mead, juice”). Association with Lithuanian smarsas (“fat, smell of greasy meat”) is doubtful. Alternatively derived from Moosbeere.
