Etymology edit

мрак (mrak, darkness) +‎ -о- (-o-) +‎ -бе́с (-bés, -maniac); the suffix -бе́с (-bés) is cognate with беси́ться (besítʹsja, to be furious). Historically, derives from мракобе́сие (mrakobésije), which was coined by Bestuzhev-Marlinsky in the 1810s and popularized by Belinsky.
