From Proto-Samic *oaksē, from Proto-Finno-Permic *oksa.

Related to Komi-Zyrian вос (vos). Cognates include Skolt Sami åʹhss, Kildin Sami вуэккьс (vuekk’s) and Northern Sami oaksi.
