Inherited from Old East Slavic отьчизна (otĭčizna, (fore)fathers, lineage, patrimony), from Proto-Slavic *otьči(z)na.

Cognate to Ukrainian вітчи́зна (vitčýzna) and Polish ojczyzna. By surface analysis, оте́ц (otéc) +‎ -изна (-izna).
