Inherited from Old East Slavic отьчизна (otĭčizna, (fore)fathers, lineage, patrimony). Cognate to Ukrainian вітчи́зна (vitčýzna) and Polish ojczyzna. Synchronically analysable as оте́ц (otéc) +‎ -изна (-izna).
