Inherited from Old East Slavic скоморохъ (skomoroxŭ), of unknown origin. Possibly from Ancient Greek σκώμμαρχος (skṓmmarkhos, joke leader) (σκῶμμα (skômma)+ἀρχός (arkhós)) or from Italian scaramuccia.
