From *yarčïq "splinter, broken piece", from Proto-Turkic *yār- (to break, crack, split).

Cognate with Tatar ярчык (yarçıq, splinter), Karaim jarčych, Khakas чарчых (çarçıx, piece of chopped wood; splinter).
