Etymology

Cognate with Kazakh сайлау (sailau), Kumyk сайламакъ (saylamaq), Crimean Tatar saylamaq, Uzbek saylamoq, Uyghur سايلىماق (saylimaq), Turkmen saýlamak, Turkish saylamak (“to choose, select”).

Compare also Kyrgyz шайлоо (şayloo, “to elect”), Southern Altai сайлаар (saylaar, “to remove the husk of nuts”). In the Kyrgyz cognate, note the untrivial phonetic shift and a narrowed semantic field. The Altay cognate is probably unrelated.
