אַפּטייק
Yiddish edit
Alternative forms edit
- אַפּאָטייק (apoteyk)
Etymology edit
Ultimately from Ancient Greek ἀποθήκη (apothḗkē). Likely inherited from an early Germanic borrowing (cf. German Apotheke, Dutch apotheek), hence the use of ־יי־ (-ey-) instead of ־ע־ (-e-); but the loss of ־אָ־ (-o-) may have been influenced by Slavic languages, cf. Polish apteka, Russian апте́ка (aptéka).
Noun edit
אַפּטייק • (apteyk) f, plural אַפּטייקן (apteykn), diminutive אַפּטייקל (apteykl)
- pharmacy (a place where prescription drugs are dispensed)
