From Middle Persian dʾt' (dāt, dād, law, justice), Old Persian 𐎭𐎠𐎫 (dāta-), from Proto-Iranian *dāta-, from the root *√dā (to give, put), from Proto-Indo-European *deh₃-; Cognate to Persian داد (dâd) and, more remotely, Latin data, nominative plural of datum (that is given).
