Hitpa'el derivation from a new root extracted from אַשְׁכְּנַז (Ashkenáz).

  1. (informal) To adopt Ashkenazi mannerisms, especially for the purpose of improving one's apparent socioeconomic status.
    • 1998, Aryé Dayán, Hama'ayán hamitgabér: sipurá shel tnu'át Shas, page 118:
      כאשר סיים את לימודיו במדרשייה, ב-1957, היה אפשר לומר ש״השתכנז לחלוטין״.
      When he finished his studies at the college, in 1957, it was possible to say that he "had ashkenazified completely".
