Ultimately from Hadrami 𐩢𐩳𐩧𐩣𐩩 (ḥḍrmt); see Arabic حَضْرَمُوت (ḥaḍramūt) for more. A common folk etymology derives it from the native Hebrew words חָצֵר (ḥāṣēr, yard, place) + מוות / מָוֶת (māweṯ, death).
