editFrom Proto-West Semitic *ʕaḏr- m (“help”, verbal noun); the meaning of this verb *ʕaḏar- (“to assist”) has specialized in Arabic عُذْر (ʕuḏr) and Sabaean 𐩲𐩹𐩧 (ʿḏr, “excuse, pardon”) but is also kept in Sabaean 𐩲𐩹𐩧 (ʿḏr, “followers; community”).
