Etymology

edit

Cognate to German Papst. The development of "וי" may be from some alternate or dialectal form in Middle High German paubest or baubest, from Middle High German pābest, bābest, ultimately from earlier bābes, from Old High German bābes, from Old French papes, from Latin pāpa, pappa (father, originally). Compare זוימען (zoymen) for the development of the diphthong.
