Borrowed from Aramaic אֲרִיסָא (ʾărīsā, “tenant farmer”), from Akkadian 𒇽𒅕𒊑𒂊𒋗 (/⁠errēšu⁠/, “tenant farmer, cultivator”), occupational noun of 𒀳 (/⁠erēšu⁠/, “to till”), hence doublet of حَرَّاث (ḥarrāṯ).
