editBorrowed from Aramaic אֲרִיסָא (ʾărīsā, “tenant farmer”), from Akkadian 𒇽𒅕𒊑𒂊𒋗 (/errēšu/, “tenant farmer, cultivator”), occupational noun of 𒀳 (/erēšu/, “to till”), hence doublet of حَرَّاث (ḥarrāṯ).
