Etymology

Perhaps a Turkicized form from the unattested Byzantine Greek toponym *Σβάριδα (*Sbárida), from the accusative form of Ancient Greek Βάρις (Báris) with the prefix σ-. At the beginning of the 19th century the city was known as حمید آباد (hâmid âbâd).
