Etymology

From Classical Syriac ܚܡܵܡܵܐ (ḥəmāmā). Cognate to Ancient Greek ἄμωμον (ámōmon)Latin amōmum, an Oriental borrowing. The source of this word is lost. It is also not certain which plants were really denoted in antiquity by these words – regard in particular that the genus Amomum alone comprises around two hundred species and new ones are found.
