Etymology edit

From a reduplicated onomatopoeic root ق ف ق ف (q-f-q-f). Compare قَرْقَفَ (qarqafa, shiver), غَرْغَرَ (ḡarḡara, gurgle), وَسْوَسَ (waswasa, whisper), قَمْقَمَ (qamqama, grumble).
