Etymology

From the root ن خ ش (n-ḵ-š), meaning "to urge an animal", "to lash or spur", "to hurt or weaken a side", "to strip barks of wood"; in the sense that the gills appear as side lacerations; the plant sense is derived from likening the appearance of its branched leaves to fish gills.
