Inherited from Proto-Turkic *yāyïn (catfish, sheatfish; salmon); cognate with Bashkir йәйен (yəyen), Chuvash ҫуйӑн (śujăn), Kazakh жайын (jaiyn), Kumyk яйын (yayın), Kyrgyz жайын (jayın), Nogai яйын (yayın) and Tatar җәен (cäyen).
