From the earlier uncontracted form ܓܦܢܬܐ (gəp̄entā), from the root ܓ-ܦ-ܢ (ɡ-p-n) related to digging; compare Arabic جَفْنَة (jafna), Hebrew גֶּפֶן (gép̄en).
