Etymology edit

From Akkadian 𒌅𒄴𒉡 (/⁠duḫnu; tuḫnu⁠/, millet), ultimately from a variation of Proto-Semitic *ṭaḥan-/*ṭaḥaḥ- (to grind, to pound, to crush, to break down into pieces; especially of corn). Compare Arabic دُخْن (duḵn) and Hebrew דֹּחַן (dōḥan).
