Derived morphologically from ܒܲܩܵܠܵܐ (baqqālā, greengrocer), coined as substitute for the more common Anglicism ܣܘܼܦܲܪ ܡܲܐܪܟܹܬ (sūpar maˀrkēt) and colloquialism from French ܟܲܪܹܦ̮ܘܼܪ (karrēfūr).
