Inherited from Prakrit *𑀞𑀝𑁆𑀞 (*ṭhaṭṭha, joke). Cognate with Gujarati ઠટ્ઠૉ (ṭhaṭṭhŏ), Hindustani ٹَھٹّھا (ṭhaṭṭhā) / ठट्ठा (ṭhaṭṭhā), Sindhi ٺَٺو / ठठो, Punjabi ਠੱਠਾ (ṭhaṭṭhā) / ٹھٹھّا (ṭhṭhhā), Nepali ठट्टा (ṭhaṭṭā), Odia ଥଟା (thaṭā), ଥଟ୍ଟା (thaṭṭā), Bengali ঠাট্টা (ṭhaṭṭa), Assamese ঠাটা (thata).
