Etymology edit

Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀕𑁄𑀯𑁆𑀯𑀭 (govvara), from Sanskrit गोर्वर (gorvara, pulverized cow dung), a compound of गो (go, cow) +‎ वर (vara, gift, blessing), literally gift of the cow, since cow dung was used for various important purposes (like as a fuel, a fertilizer, and even as an ingredient for rituals). Cognate with Assamese গোবৰ (gübor), Bengali গোবর (gōbor), Hindi गोबर (gobar) and Sylheti ꠉꠥꠙꠞ (gufor).
