Etymology edit
Borrowed from Classical Syriac ܙܝܬܐ (zaytā, “olive”). Cognate with Arabic زیتون (zaytūn), Hebrew זַיִת (záyit), Gujarati જેતૂન (jetūn) and Hindi ज़ैतून (zaitūn).

- 1939, Peshitta New Testament, Matthew 26.30:
- അനന്തരം സ്തോത്രം ചെയ്തിട്ട് അവർ സൈത്തുകളുടെ മലയിലേക്ക് പുറപ്പെട്ടു.
- anantaraṁ stōtraṁ ceytiṭṭ avaṟ saittukaḷuṭe malayilēkkŭ puṟappeṭṭu.
- After praising, they left for the Mount of olives.
- olive oil, oil derived from the fruit of this tree.
