Traditionally analyzed (per MED) as a compound of ကျောက် (kyauk, stone) +‎ ကျော (kyau:, smooth), though the word may alternatively be borrowed from Teochew 草粿 (cao2 guê2); in the latter case, compare Thai เฉาก๊วย (chǎo-gúai).
