ἀνθρηδών

Ancient Greek edit

Etymology edit

Undoubtedly a Pre-Greek word, like ἀνθρήνη (anthrḗnē), πεμφρηδών (pemphrēdṓn) and τενθρηδών (tenthrēdṓn). Needless to say, the connection with θρέομαι (thréomai, to cry aloud, shriek) and θόρυβος (thórubos, uproar, clamor) makes no sense. A difficult problem is the relation to Germanic and Balto-Slavic words for "drone": Proto-Germanic *drēnuz, Lithuanian tranas, Proto-Slavic *trǫtъ.
