Etymology

From a previous form ϝίτυς (wítus), from Proto-Hellenic *wítus, that proves a derivation from Proto-Indo-European *weh₁y- (to twist, to twine). Cognate with Latin vitus (felloe), Ancient Greek ἰτέα (itéa, willow), ἶρις (îris, rainbow) and οἶσος (oîsos, withy).
